It is where we all came from and it is vital to our future, but the earth’s oceans, seas and waterways remain a mystery to us – a final frontier. The Sunrise project is at the forefront of a revolution in communications, creating an underwater ‘internet of things’, that will mobilise robots to work in groups, interacting together and passing back information to us on life underwater.

As refered in a previous post   REP14 - Atlantic  stands for Recognized Environmental Picture (REP) Atlantic 2014, and was a joint exercise of the Portuguese Navy, the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), and the University of Porto, through the Laboratório de Sistemas e Tecnologia Subaquática (LSTS).
This exercise was conducted at the Lisbon naval base and of the coasts of Sesimbra and Sines, Portugal. The exercise was focused on evaluating, testing, and demonstrating tools and technologies for persistent operations of collaborative underwater, surface and air vehicles in mine hunting, oceanography, expeditionary hydrography, search and rescue, environmental knowledge, maritime security and harbour protection.

Check the numbers and highlights of this exercise.

From 7 to 28 July, four naval units and ten international partners conduct collaborative experimentation off the coast of Portugal.

Multi-domain cooperative robotics could significantly improve current capabilities of Navies at sea. The Portuguese Navy and the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (FEUP), along with the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), based in La Spezia (Italy), are at sea off the coast of Portugal, from 7 to 28 of July 2014, to test networks of unmanned maritime vehicles (surface, underwater and aerial) and develop new solutions in the fields of underwater communications and autonomy in operational scenarios.

"Robots of the deep" an article from Euronews presenting our vehicles, and what we are developing under the SUNRISE project.

In May, our vehicles will be off the coast of Olhão, Portugal, executing an innovative experiment.
A group of ocean sunfish will be tagged and our vehicles will gather data in the vicinity of the fish, hoping to cast some more light on the behavior of theses fish.
