REP14 highlights and numbers

As refered in a previous post   REP14 - Atlantic  stands for Recognized Environmental Picture (REP) Atlantic 2014, and was a joint exercise of the Portuguese Navy, the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), and the University of Porto, through the Laboratório de Sistemas e Tecnologia Subaquática (LSTS). 
 

This exercise was conducted at the Lisbon naval base and of the coasts of Sesimbra and Sines, Portugal. The exercise was focused on evaluating, testing, and demonstrating tools and technologies for persistent operations of collaborative underwater, surface and air vehicles in mine hunting, oceanography, expeditionary hydrography, search and rescue, environmental knowledge, maritime security and harbour protection. 

Supporting these operations, were the ships NRP Pegaso, NRP Auriga, and the submarine NRP Arpão from the Portuguese Navy, and the NATO Research Vessel Alliance.
Some of the highlights of the experiment were:

  • Inter-operated underwater and radio communication networks were used for multi-vehicle coordination and control with support for disruptive tolerant networking
  • Long range AUVs provided support for 24+ operations
  • Deliberative on-board planning capabilities provide unprecedented levels of autonomy.
  • Deliberative planning techniques were also used to support coordinated planning and execution control of multiple vehicles
  • Unmanned air vehicles were used as communication relays and also for tasking autonomous underwater vehicles
  • USBL techniques were used for localization and tracking of multiple targets
  • Launch and recovery of autonomous underwater vehicles from NRP Arpão was done at sea as a first step towards automating the launch and recovery process from manned submarines.

The participants of REP14-Atlantic included the University of Rome (Italy), the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (USA), the College of Charleston (USA), the Royal Institute of Technology and the companies Evologics (Germany) and Oceanscan (Portugal).
