First public appearance of EUMR at Oceanology International 2018

EUMR’s participation on Oceanology International 2018 was a success! This was the project first public appearance and we had the chance to announce our planned activities, with special focus on public calls for researchers and industry to access EUMR infrastructures, training, education, and data that will be opened during the projects lifecycle.

During this event, a series of important contacts were made, with both Academia and Industry elements, to promote the TNA calls that will open during 2018.

The interest gathered from industry was considerable and the follow-ups to all entities will now begin, in conjunction with the elaboration of the calls themselves. One modality of TNA participation that was viewed with great adherence was the participation on the calls as a means of testing, integrating and benchmark versions of their products (types of payload for instance).

Some of the follow-ups were already expanded during the Blue Tech Economy event, with The Maritime Alliance, in Portugal.

Os oceanos são a região menos explorada do planeta Terra e a proteção e o desenvolvimento sustentável dos seus recursos apresentam grandes desafios. Além disso, os veículos robóticos vão desempenhar um papel fundamental num futuro próximo, cada vez mais desafiante sobretudo na expansão em ambientes marinhos mais profundos, remotos e hostis. Mas apesar de haver uma comunidade dinâmica em expansão nesta área, a Europa está ainda muito condicionada em termos de uma efetiva integração e operação em rede, sendo que as oportunidades de acesso às infraestruturas de investigação são muitas vezes escassas ou pouco coordenadas.

Com este enquadramento em mente, surge o EUMarineRobots (EUMR), projeto europeu coordenado pelo Laboratório de Sistemas e Tecnologia Subaquática (LSTS) da Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP) que junta 15 parceiros de dez países, num grupo de entidades globalmente distinguidas nas áreas do Mar e da robótica.

Short Training Course for Civil Defence

In order to transfer the know-how gained during the Expanded Underwater Robotics Ready for Oil Spill (e-URready4OS) project to Maritime Safety Agencies has planned a short training course for Civil Defence technical staff in the Oceanographic Centre – University of Cyprus on November 9^th to 10th. The aim of this course is to introduce the technical staff of maritime safety agencies in the use of this new technologies. More information is available here.

Paulo Dias from LSTS took part of that training workshop by presenting the work done on the integration of the e-URready4OS tools and features into Neptus.

During the first week of June (5-9) the LSTS participated in a large scope joint exercise off the coast of Cartagena with members from Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering (UNIZG-FER), Oceanographic Center University of Cyprus, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Tallinn University of Technology (TUT) and Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS). The exercise took place onboard the Clara Campoamor vessel provided by the Spanish Maritime Safety Agency (SASEMAR).

During the week long exercises the LSTS spearheaded series of multi-system deployments culminating in a simultaneous AUV, ASV and UAV deployment at the end of the work week.

The purpose of this exercise was to test and benchmark operational challenges when deploying fleets of systems, from different manufactures, with the objective of detecting and monitoring oil spills. In this regard, the LSTS software toolchain served as a pivotal point of control and cooperation between all active systems. The Neptus C4I platform was used to plan, control and supervise the whole series of operations and also analyse all the collected data from the deployed systems.

The next iteration of this exercise will take place in Cork, during 2018, and will count with added participation from University of the Balearic Islands, University of Girona and the Irish Coast Guard.

We were invited by Professor Martin Ludvigsen from the Department of Marine Technology (IMT) of NTNU, to take part in a series of operations to collect and analyze data from the water column with autonomous vehicles, under the project ENTiCE. The operations will take place roughly 10km north of Mausund, in open waters, with the main focus on collecting data regarding the temporal variance of physical characteristics of the water column as well as to the abundance and biodiversity along the vertical structure.

One Early Stage Researcher Position under MarineUAS Project

We have openings for one position as researcher at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (UPORTO), Porto, Portugal.

The position is for 10 months and focused on the research challenge of “Cooperative motion control between Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and marine robotic vehicles for plume tracing”. The objective of the project is to develop and test high-level motion control strategies involving multiple autonomous robotic vehicles (UAS and marine robotic systems) to find, track and map plumes fronts in the ocean and estuaries. Key goals include the implementation and validation of the developed concepts through field tests with the robotic vehicles developed at Underwater Systems and Technologies Laboratory (LSTS), in marine science scenarios.
