First public appearance of EUMR at Oceanology International 2018

EUMR’s participation on Oceanology International 2018 was a success! This was the project first public appearance and we had the chance to announce our planned activities, with special focus on public calls for researchers and industry to access EUMR infrastructures, training, education, and data that will be opened during the projects lifecycle.

During this event, a series of important contacts were made, with both Academia and Industry elements, to promote the TNA calls that will open during 2018.

The interest gathered from industry was considerable and the follow-ups to all entities will now begin, in conjunction with the elaboration of the calls themselves. One modality of TNA participation that was viewed with great adherence was the participation on the calls as a means of testing, integrating and benchmark versions of their products (types of payload for instance).

Some of the follow-ups were already expanded during the Blue Tech Economy event, with The Maritime Alliance, in Portugal.

O LSTS esteve presente na Missão Empresarial do BlueTech Cluster de San Diego, Estados Unidos da América, “The Maritime Alliance”, encontro B2B realizado pela Fórum Oceano, em Lisboa.

Este encontro serviu para expandir contactos já feitos durante o evento Oceanology Internacional 2018 com o presidente da Maritime Alliance, Michael B. Jones, e com o seu CEO, Greg Murphy, relativamente às calls de TNA (trans-national access) do projecto EUMarine Robots. Estas TNA foram também apresentadas a outras empresas que fazem parte da Maritime Alliance, tais como a Swift Engineering, Innerspace Corporation e Halo Maritime Defense Systems.

O contacto com instituições portuguesas serviu para promover as TNA de infraestruturas não portuguesas do consórcio do projecto.

Foi ainda feito um convite para apresentar o projecto EUMarine Robots em Agosto de 2018 na University of Southern Mississippi (MIST Cluster), pelo seu Director Robbie Ingram.

LSTS was present at the Missão Empresarial do BlueTech Cluster de San Diego, Estados Unidos da América, “The Maritime Alliance”, a B2B meeting held by Fórum Oceano in Lisbon.

This meeting served to expand contacts already made during Oceanology International 2018 event with Maritime Alliance President Michael B. Jones and its CEO, Greg Murphy, regarding TNA (trans-national access) calls for the EUMarine Robots project. These TNAs were also presented to other companies that are part of the Maritime Alliance, such as Swift Engineering, Innerspace Corporation and Halo Maritime Defense Systems.

The contact with Portuguese institutions served to promote the TNA of non-Portuguese infrastructures of the project consortium.

An invitation was also made to present the EUMarine Robots project in August 2018 at the University of Southern Mississippi (MIST Cluster), by its Director Robbie Ingram.

O LSTS, em colaboração com a Escola Secundária João Gonçalves Zarco, através da sua iniciativa Erasmus+, procedeu a uma apresentação do contexto geral do laboratório, dando exemplos das suas operações e dos vários projectos em que se encontra envolvido, tais como Fire-RS e EUMarine Robots.

Esta visita contou com alunos e professores vindos de vários países, nomeadamente Suécia, Noruega, República Checa e Dinamarca. Foi ainda feito um tour pelo LSTS, para que os visitantes pudessem entrar em contacto em primeira mão com os sistemas desenvolvidos pelo laboratório.

O principal objectivo desta visita consistiu na abertura de portas para uma ligação mais estreita entre as duas entidades, possibilitando a criação de diversas iniciativas curriculares que beneficiem tanto a Escola Secundária João Gonçalves Zarco, como a Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, através do LSTS

LSTS, in collaboration with the João Gonçalves Zarco Secondary School, through its Erasmus + initiative, presented the general context of the laboratory, giving examples of its operations and the various projects in which it is involved, such as Fire-RS and EUMarine Robots.

This visit had students and professors coming from several countries, namely Sweden, Norway, Czech Republic and Denmark. A tour of the LSTS was also made so that visitors could come into contact first hand with the systems developed by the laboratory.

The main objective of this visit was to open the doors to a closer connection between the two entities, allowing the creation of several curricular initiatives that benefit both the João Gonçalves Zarco Secondary School and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, through LSTS.

The EUMarine Robots Kick Off Meeting was successfully completed in Porto, Portugal on the 1st and 2nd of March, 2018. The meeting facilitated partner introductions and allowed a detailed examination of all project future activities and goals.

During the two day meeting, partners had the opportunity to discuss various topics, including project objectives, the governance structure, milestones, management processes and tools, project roadmap and partners responsibilities.

This meeting was a great chance to consolidate the consortium, project management key points and to map the road ahead!

Projects

Os oceanos são a região menos explorada do planeta Terra e a proteção e o desenvolvimento sustentável dos seus recursos apresentam grandes desafios. Além disso, os veículos robóticos vão desempenhar um papel fundamental num futuro próximo, cada vez mais desafiante sobretudo na expansão em ambientes marinhos mais profundos, remotos e hostis. Mas apesar de haver uma comunidade dinâmica em expansão nesta área, a Europa está ainda muito condicionada em termos de uma efetiva integração e operação em rede, sendo que as oportunidades de acesso às infraestruturas de investigação são muitas vezes escassas ou pouco coordenadas.

Com este enquadramento em mente, surge o EUMarineRobots (EUMR), projeto europeu coordenado pelo Laboratório de Sistemas e Tecnologia Subaquática (LSTS) da Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP) que junta 15 parceiros de dez países, num grupo de entidades globalmente distinguidas nas áreas do Mar e da robótica.
