Juntamente com instituições científicas nacionais e estrangeiras, da NATO e a Marinha belga, a Marinha portuguesa participou no REP 17, durante o qual foram testadas capacidades de veículos autónomos submarinos, de superfície e aéreos

De 10 a 21 de Julho, a Marinha portuguesa participou na 8ª edição do exercício «Recognized Environmental Picture» (REP17), na costa de Sesimbra e na península de Tróia, durante o qual foram testados veículos autónomos não tripulados, vulgarmente designados por drones, submarinos, de superfície e aéreos.

Segundo a Marinha, os veículos autónomos estavam dotados de “diferentes sensores, características e modens acústicos”, tendo sido testadas as suas “potencialidades a partir de diferentes plataformas e áreas de operação”, como “as comunicações acústicas subaquáticas, comunicações submarinas entre submarinos e veículos autónomos, reconhecimento do fundo em áreas em que a capacidade humana não o permite ou represente risco acrescido para a operação de mergulhadores em caso de busca e salvamento”.

Os drones foram utilizados a partir de navios da Marinha – “as lanchas rápidas Hidra e Cassiopeia e o submarino Arpão, com o apoio de mergulhadores da Marinha pertencentes ao Destacamento de Guerra de Minas”, referem fonte da Armada portuguesa.

O REP “é um exercício conjunto da Marinha com a Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP) e em parceria com o NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE)”, explica a Marinha, acrescentando que constitui uma referência “na área da experimentação dos veículos autónomos” e uma oportunidade para demonstrar inovações nacionais e estrangeiras no domínio do “planeamento e controlo de operação de sistemas de veículos submarinos, de superfície e aéreos, através de redes de comunicação, subaquática, rádio e satélite, interoperáveis”.

Este ano, o exercício envolveu também “a Marinha Belga e observadores do Naval Undersea Warfare Center (EUA), do Norwegion University of Science and Technology, Universidade do Hawai e CMU Carnigie Mellon University (EUA)”, refere a Marinha.

From January 18th to 20th, the Underwater Systems and Technology Laboratory from FEUP, OceanScan MST, and the Portuguese Navy (Mine Warfare Diving Unit nº3 and the Hydrographic Institute) performed several joint tests to evaluate the performance of LAUV vehicles on sidescan sonar and magnetometer surveys.

On the 18th and 20th, the operations took place in Tagus river (Mar da Palha) using a Mindelo class vessel and three LAUV vehicles equipped with sidescan sonar. It was possible to validate the coordinated use of three vehicles to survey an area almost the size of 30 soccer fields in little more than an hour.

On the 19^th, operations took place on board of NRP Centauro patrol boat from the Portuguese Navy, off the coast of Sesimbra. The aim of this test was to validate the integration of a magnetometer in a LAUV and compare its efficiency with towed magnetometers. To do that, a metal barrel was sunk at known place and multiple surveys were undertook both by a RHIB with towed magnetometer and the LAUV vehicle (with onboard magnetometer).

A Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP) recebeu no dia 17 de Novembro o Embaixador da Noruega, Anders Erdal, que se deslocou ao Porto com a sua comitiva, por ocasião do evento Business2Sea. Durante o encontro, o Laboratório de Sistemas e Tecnologia Subaquática (LSTS) da FEUP teve a oportunidade de dar a conhecer o trabalho desenvolvido na área dos veículos autónomos e de apresentar os resultados já alcançados ao nível do projeto Networked Ocean (NetOcean), financiado pelo EEA Grants.

Uma equipa de investigadores da Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP) está a participar no “Rapid Environmental Picture 2016” (REP16) desde o dia 5 de julho. Trata-se de um exercício anual que tem por objetivo testar, avaliar e validar os veículos autónomos não-tripulados em rede em ambientes operacionais definidos de acordo com as especificações da Marinha Portuguesa. Esta é a sétima edição do REP16 que está a decorrer ao largo da costa de Sesimbra e Setúbal, até dia 31 de julho.

As in previous years, LSTS and the Portuguese Navy are once again co-organizing REP16 exercise. This year, among the participants are CMRE, the Belgian Navy, SPAWAR and Oceanscan-OMT. Observing this exercise will be members from the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, NASA and JPI Oceans.

Last Monday, the Secretary of State for National Defense, the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Macieira Fragoso and other guest were invited for the demonstration of this joint exercise.

Sérgio Ferreira and Paulo Dias participated in the Gunnerus exercises in Trondheim from 24th of April to the 30th of April. The experiment served as a first trial in the MBR radio integration that will be tested during the Networked Oceans project. The initial integration with X8 UAVs was successful and now must be extended to other systems in the toolchain.

In July we were at Azores, for the REP 15 exercise. There we put once again our systems to test, responding to a series of challenges.

This exercise was divided in three phase with specific objectives. Phase I operations took place on shore and near shore executing military exercises aligned with the interests of Portuguese Navy. In phase II, we were on board the NRP Almirante Gago Coutinho, offshore off of Horta, hoping to collect data to allow the characterization of wakes of cetaceans and sample the transect along S. Mateus and Azores banks. For phase III we went back to near shore operations. You can find more details on the REP 15 page.

Illustrative 3D Visualization of Networked Vehicles Systems, is a master thesis by Yekaterina Kirilyuk, which aimed to create a three-dimensional illustrative visualization to convey the concept of real missions executed by means of robotic vehicles to the technical and non-technical public.

From 6^th to 29^th of July, the exercise REP Atlantic 15 will take place in Azores. Organized by LSTS and the Portuguese Navy this exercise aims to push further our capacity to operate and control a network of underwater, surface and aerial autonomous vehicles and systems.

As you may find in REP 15 webpage (rep15.lsts.pt), this exercise will be divided in 3 phases:

During phase I of this exercises, operations will take place on shore and near shore, to ensure scientific and cultural alignment with various groups working on REP15. On the Yellow Zone OMST/FEUP will execute military exercises aligned with the interests of Portuguese Navy, while on the Green Zone all the other teams will meet to start the test with all vehicles and systems.

In phase II, operations will be on board the NRP Almirante Gago Coutinho, offshore off of Horta. Driven by engineering goals, we hope to use our AUV’s, UAV’s and drifters to collect data which will allow the characterization of wakes of cetaceans and sample the transect along S. Mateus and Azores banks.

For phase III we will go back to near shore operations. Here our objective will be to map shallow vents in Faial/Pico channel, operating several vehicles simultaneously.

REP14-Atlantic stands for Recognized Environmental Picture (REP) Atlantic 2014. REP14-Atlantic is a joint exercise of the Portuguese Navy, the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) and the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (FEUP).
REP14-Atlantic is a large experiment to be conducted in the Lisbon Naval Base and off the coasts of Sesimbra and Sines, in Portugal, from 7 to 24 July 2014. It includes several Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASVs), Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with different sensors and acoustic payloads, which will be deployed from Portuguese Navy ships NRP (“Navio da Republica Portuguesa” i.e. Ship of the Portuguese Republic) Pégaso, NRP Auriga, submarine NRP Arpão and the NATO Research Vessel Alliance.

Since 2006 LSTS has been collaborating with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), California on several events, being one of the latest REP 13 with the T-REX integration on both AUV and UAV.

During this month, a research team from LSTS is taking part on CANON: Controlled, Agile, and Novel Observing Network, an ongoing MBARI initiative that aims to remotely collect a clearer image of the constantly changing oceanic conditions.
