Don’t miss it.

UPTEC - Science and Technology Park, University of Porto was visited on 19 December by the Minister of Agriculture and Sea, Assunção Cristas.

This was an opportunity to show new technologies applied to agriculture and maritime activities that are being developed at the University of Porto by researchers from Underwater Systems and Technology Laboratory (LSTS), from FEUP and  Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR).

On the week 10 to 15 November a team of four people from LSTS went to Funchal (Madeira) for a demonstration of the current operational capabilities.
This initiative was brought with the aim of presenting the underwater robotic vehicles and theirs potentiality in surveying and data collection in port and coastal environments.

Today, João Sousa and Kanna Rajan are at the " Seminário do Mar - The New Challenges of the Atlantic" Conference.

This conference, organized by “Centro de Estudos Estratégicos do Atlântico”,  is part of the project "Extension of the Continental Shelf: Implications for Strategic Decision Making", funded by FCT, in partnership with the Navy and the ESRI Portugal, as part of the Center for Business and Public Policy Institute of Social and Political Sciences, University of Lisbon.

The Technical Unconscious is a program that relates culture and research, exploring the relation between the technique associated with gesture and the unconscious knowledge.
As a result of this research, the Faculty of Fine Arts, of University of Porto brings to us an exhibit that invites us to reflect about art and science in a post-industrial space and city.

Taking place in Cooperativa dos Pedreiros do Porto (loosely translated as Cooperative of Stonemasons of Port) this is an opportunity to visit the former industrial site where the stone used in the construction of most emblematic buildings of Porto was quarried and crafted.

During the last week a team from LSTS went to Galicia and Corunna to take part in the second demo of the project NETMAR, that happened at 1st October at A Pobra do Caramiñal.

The scenario created for this exercise, involved a ship that suffered damage to the hull during a storm and was leaking fuel causing a spill. An UAV would then be deployed to assess the contaminated area. Drifters would also be deployed to accurately understand the way the fuel was spreading and an UAV would make a survey to acquire a more precise image of the contaminated area. During this operation containment measure would be put in place and a ROV would make a hull inspection to evaluate the damage.

After the demonstration a smaller part of the team headed further north for the seminar "New scenarios of maritime safety in the European Union. Reflections after the Erika and Prestige disasters” at Oleiros.
